Color Blind Chart: What Is It?

A Color Blind Chart is used to determine whether or not an individual has some form of color blindness, or a lack of ability to discern between various colors. Although there are several Color Blind Charts out there, they all have the same purpose and test the exact same parameters.

Alternate Names:

  • Color Blind Chart Test;
  • Color Blind Eye Chart.

The most popular of these is the Ishihara’s Test which has been used for over one hundred years. Every one of the exams involves a series of dots that are colored in different colors on various plates. Every plate will display a trail or either a single digit or a two digit number which need to be identified. Doctors throughout the globe continue to utilize this as the most common color vision deficit exam.

To carry out a Color Blind Chart Test correctly you must:

  • Find a suitable test and understand the instructions of what you are meant to see. In the case of the Ishihara test, the first seventeen plates will show numbers and the final seven plates will show you a trail;
  • Sit a minimum of 70cm from your computer screen and ensure that the circles are level with your eyes;
  • Use natural light and make sure to avoid artificial as this could alter the colors on screen;
  • Record your answers concerning what you can see.

How to Pass a Color Blind Test?

In some professions, it may be important for the employer to understand whether or not a prospective employee has color blindness as this can be critical in some industries. Although there are some ways for people to bypass the test we would strongly recommend for you to avoid doing this but there are some tips that can be used to make sure you are well-rested and prepared for the test:

  • Avoid physically demanding exercises the day prior to the examination because they might quickly tire the eyes. This causes difficulty in selecting the right response in the exam. Just before carrying out the test, refrain from using your eyes for prolonged periods of time which particularly includes using a mobile device, watching television or playing video games;
  • Avoid visiting places like nightclubs because the lighting can be excessively bright in such places. The stimulus to the retina can be too strong when exposure in this environment is prolonged;
  • The perception of color can be altered by some medications. Psychotropic medications are among them and it may be best for these to be avoided prior to the exam;
  • Specific chemicals may prevent you from passing the exam, therefore if you are exposed to them frequently, be aware that it could have a substantial impact on how you perceive color.

If you ensure that your eyes are rested and have not undergone any stress, there should be no issues for you to pass the test if you do not suffer from color blindness.
