Daily Mood Log: What Is It?

A Daily Mood Log provides an opportunity for individuals to make recordings about their mood and how it changes on a daily basis. In some cases, a healthcare professional may request an individual to keep a note of this for a specific period of time in order to observe how the mood of an individual changes and help deduce possible factors that could have an effect on the mood.

In order to recognize the variation in the changes in mood caused by conditions such as bipolar disorder, implementing a Daily Mood Log can be extremely helpful. This may be directly related to the number of hours an individual has slept or some medication that they are taking.

Filling in the log is extremely simple and although the logs can differ, they will all require the same information. Some of the information that can be included in a log is described below:

  • Once the day comes to an end, mark on the log the biggest mood value you can give for that day along with the smallest mood value to see whether or not your mood has changed over the day or whether it was stable;
  • Record how many hours you have slept every day;
  • Record your weight at least once a week to see if this is being affected;
  • If you experienced any stressful events during that day, make a note of this;
  • Any medicine taken during the day and any alcohol consumed should also be recorded.
