The main purpose of Form I-864 is to financially support an immigrant, and the beneficiary of this affidavit is called the principal immigrant. There must be at least one individual sponsored when applying for an immigrant visa or adjustment of status in order to become a lawful permanent resident. Family members of the principal immigrant, who wish to travel with them or within six months of the immigrant's arrival, are optional in the sponsor affidavit.

How to Fill Out Form I-864?

Form I-684 instructions are as follows:

  1. Write down your name and state the basis for filing this document - family immigration or employment immigration. You may file the form on behalf of your relative, fiancé, orphan, or a convention adoptee. Indicate whether you are a joint sponsor or a substitute sponsor.
  2. Provide the principal immigrant's details - full name, mailing address, citizenship or nationality, date of birth, alien registration number, USCIS account number, and telephone number.
  3. If the principal immigrant wishes to bring their spouse or children to the U.S., list their names and other personal information. Record the total number of immigrants you decided to sponsor using this affidavit.
  4. Add your personal details - full name, mailing and physical addresses, country of residence, date of birth, place of birth, Social Security Number (SSN), citizenship or residency status, alien registration number, and USCIS account number. State whether you are currently on active duty in the Coast Guard or Armed Forces.
  5. Describe your household by entering the number of individuals for whom you bear financial responsibility - spouse, children, and other dependents.
  6. State your current employment status, name of the employer, occupation, or date when your retirement or unemployment began. Enter your individual annual income. If you use the income from other individuals from your household, write down their names, relationship to you, and current income. Compute your annual household income. Indicate whether you have filed an income tax return for the past three years and report the total income for that period of time.
  7. If you have to access your assets to comply with the income requirements, enter the balance of all checking accounts and savings, cash value of the real estate, bonds, stocks, and other assets. Include the assets of your household member or principal immigrant and calculate the total amount of assets.
  8. Learn about the legal effect of signing the form, confirm you have understood all the contents of the affidavit, provide your contact information, sign and date the form.
