A Paper Helicopter refers to a toy aircraft with one or several sets of blades that go round made out of paper or similar lightweight material.

Alternate Name:

  • Helicopter Template.

There are some similarities with the art of origami when it comes to helicopters as long as you are able to design and finish the toy without using scissors. It is rather easy to make an entire fleet of Paper Helicopters which is perfect when you have unexpected guests that brought their kids and you need to figure out how to entertain the children with the items available in your household.

How to Make a Paper Helicopter?

You can work on a Paper Helicopter designing several toys within minutes keeping your children busy during a party or entertaining the kids you teach in kindergarten or elementary school - besides, these toys are budget-friendly making them affordable to all people interested in making sustainable toys as an alternative to plastic ones. Here is what you may do to create a Paper Helicopter design with materials you find in your house and make the toy fly:

  1. Make sure you have all the supplies ready - you will need paper, paper clips, and scissors in case you are planning to cut the future helicopters from a large sheet of paper. A small Paper Helicopter template is usually 5x7 inches before you start folding. Think about the kids that will play with the helicopter once it is ready - it must be safe for them to use the item with a paper clip attached to it.

  2. Fold the paper twice along its entire length - do not forget to make a crease so that the sheet can easily return to the predetermined position after upcoming manipulations. After that, fold the paper in half but now do it the opposite way. There will be two loose sides - fold each of them in half in different directions. Gently unfold the sheet - it should look like the letter M with all the creases you have secured.

  3. Get a paperclip and put it on the middle crease of the toy you are making - this will keep the folded section together and give some weight to the small construction you are working on. Your job is done - now all you have to do is to launch the helicopter! Once you let it fly, you will see that the flight will not last long but it will look like a gentle landing and not a fall.

  4. If the first attempt to make the helicopter fly is unsuccessful, do not get discouraged - it is possible you have chosen a paper clip that is too heavy or, on the contrary, too light. We can also recommend you to experiment with the size of the blades - change their span by cutting off small strips of paper and see if it flies better.
