Child BMI Chart: What Is It?

A Child BMI Chart is used to categorize the weight of a child aged from 2 to 17 years old, although in some cases the ages of a Child BMI Chart can differ, starting from as late as 5 years old and going all the way up to 20 years old. Once a child reaches adulthood, they should refer to an Adult BMI Chart to determine their BMI which will reflect their health more accurately.

The BMI Chart for children provides information about the fat composition of a child by evaluating their height and weight. This assessment will allow a parent to understand if their child falls into one of four categories:

  • Underweight : this would indicate that the weight of the child falls under the expected norm. Although many associate being overweight as an issue, the same can be said for individuals that are underweight. It can equally present serious health problems;
  • Normal : this is the range where the body weight of a child is considered ideal and healthy;
  • Overweight : if your BMI falls into this category then it means that a child has excess weight that they will need to get rid of as long-term excess weight can lead to health complications;
  • Obese : if a child is presented with obesity then urgent action needs to be taken and a weight loss plan needs to be formed with a medical professional.

As kids become older, both the BMI and overall body fat percentage alter. Because of this, the gender and age of a youngster or adolescent should be taken into consideration when calculating their BMI as it can have significant effects on the overall BMI value.
