PS Form 4232 Instructions

If parcels do not require a signature to be delivered, the rural customer is able to choose how they want their mail to be handled when they are absent at the time of delivery. They can instruct that parcels be left outside on the porch or that the parcel is to be picked up at the post office. If the residence is within half a mile of the carrier's route, the customer may opt to have their mailpiece left at another location, which they must specify on the form. Weather permitting, parcels may be left next to the mailbox, however, parcels will not be left in an uncovered location in bad weather. By signing this form, the rural customer agrees that the postal service and the carrier shall not be responsible if a parcel gets lost or damaged.

The form provides ten boxes where the customer may enter the full names of the individuals whom they authorize to receive their mail for them, including children and employees. This information will assure prompt delivery of mail.
