What Is Form M1PR?

Form M1PR, Homestead Credit Refund (For Homeowners) and Renter's Property Tax Refund , is an application developed by the Minnesota Department of Revenue . The purpose of the document is to let taxpayers get a refund based on their household income and the property taxes or rent paid on their primary residence in Minnesota if they qualify.

How to Fill Out M1PR Form?

The M1PR Form comes with 15 pages of instructions that explain how to complete each line of the application. The document itself consists of several parts.

  1. The first part of the document is supposed to be filled out with the personal information of an applicant, such as:

    • The name of the applicant;
    • Their Social Security number;
    • Date of birth;
    • Address.
  2. If it is being filed as a joint return, then an applicant must also fill out the same information about their spouse. After that, an applicant must indicate whether they are applying as a:

    • Homeowner;
    • Renter;
    • Nursing home or adult foster care resident;
    • Mobile homeowner.
  3. The second part of the document consists of 39 statements that an applicant should fill in. Lines 1-15 are supposed to be filled out by every applicant. This includes information about:

  4. Lines 16-18 are only supposed to be filled out by a renter, while lines 19-22 are supposed to be filled out only by homeowners, and lines 23-25 are supposed to be filled out by both. Taxpayers must provide information about the rent they paid, enclose their Certificate of Rent paid (CRP), enter the property's ID number, report if they made any Nongame Wildlife Fund contributions, and provide other types of information that can affect their refund.

  5. The rest of the statement will help count as a special refund and is supposed to be filled out by every applicant. The M1PR instructions contain a numerous amount of worksheets that are supposed to help the applicant fill out the form. If an applicant used any of them, they must include them in their return.

  6. The last part of the form contains sections for signatures, dates, phone numbers, etc.

How Long Does It Take to Get My M1PR Refund?

After the Minnesota Department of Revenue receives an application, they go through different stages before an applicant can get their refund. These stages are:

  1. Processing the applicant's return.
  2. Preparing the applicant's refund.
  3. Sending the applicant's refund.

The processing time varies. Generally, applicants should get their refund within approximately 60 days after they have filed the application. In any case, an applicant can always check the status of their refund using the official website of the Minnesota Department of Revenue, where they can see the actual date when the refund was sent.
