What Is an NC Youth Employment Certificate?

A North Carolina Youth Employment Certificate is a legal document that serves as a work permit for minors under the age of 18 who are seeking to work in the State of North Carolina. An employer is not permitted to allow a minor to begin employment without receiving this document first to comply with child labor laws.

The application for the NC Youth Work Permit is only available via the North Carolina Department of Labor (NCDOL) website. A sample copy of the previous form is available below for reference. The copy provided below was issued on July 8, 2004 .

In order to get a hold of the actual form, you'll need to visit the website and answer the questionnaire online. When you enter all the required details, you will get a certificate you may print out and present to your future employer for signing. It is non-transferable - obtain a new certificate each time you seek new employment.

How to Get a Workers Permit in NC?

Follow these steps to obtain an NC Workers Permit:

  1. Get a firm job offer.
  2. Access the Youth Employment Certificate online by visiting the NCDOL website. It is possible to do this at the location of the future employer to make sure you enter an accurate description of the job.
  3. If you are 14 or 15 years old, you have a firm job offer, the employer sells alcoholic drinks at the location or you will be working on the outside grounds while the alcohol is sold inside, answer "yes."
  4. Enter your full name, date of birth, sex, address, phone number, and email address.
  5. Provide the employer details - the name of the company, its address, phone, and email. Indicate the type of business.
  6. Indicate the job title you will have. You will see the restrictions for each type of business - they will appear on the printed permit as well.
  7. Print out the certificate. The employer will verify the age of the future employee and proposed job responsibilities and restrictions stated on the certificate. It must be signed by the employer, future employee, and their parent, guardian, or custodian.

Once the document is signed, the employer must retain it in the employee personnel file from the first day of work and for two years after the employment ends or until the employee is 20 years of age. It is not necessary to send the certificate to the NCDOL.
