Guidelines/Instructions
Inline degreasers: May also be known as automatic or conveyorized degreasers.
Units without solvent/air interfaces: Owners/operators of batch type vapor cleaning machines without a
solvent/ air interface are required to submit appropriate information on page entitled “Special Reporting
Situations.”
Freeboard height: (Batch units) Means the distance from the solvent/air interface, as measured during
idling mode, to the top of the degreaser.
(Inline units) Means the distance from the solvent/air
interface to the bottom of the entrance or exit opening, whichever is lower, measured during idling
mode.
Control Options
Freeboard Ratio greater than 1.0: Means the freeboard height divided by the shortest interior
dimension.
Refrigerated freeboard chiller: Means a control device which is mounted above the water
jacket and the primary condenser coils consisting of secondary coils which carry a refrigerant to
provide a chilled air blanket above the solvent vapor.
Dwell: Means the technique of holding parts within the freeboard area but above the vapor
zone, after the cleaning process, to allow solvent on parts or baskets to drain back into the
degreaser.
Carbon adsorber: is a unit containing a bed of activated carbon that adsorbs solvent from
exhaust air.
Superheated vapor system: is a system where solvent vapor is heated above the solvent’s
boiling point and parts are held in the superheated vapor to evaporate the solvent. Another
name is hot vapor recycle.
