Bookmark Template: What Is It?

A Bookmark refers to a small strip of paper, cardboard, or plastic put between the pages of the book, magazine, or notebook to remind the user where they will resume their reading or writing. Since it is hardly possible to finish a book in one sitting and it is pointless to waste time trying to find the last page you read, use a Bookmark to save yourself time in between the reading sessions. An editable Bookmark is also a great choice for students and researchers that take many notes - remind yourself of a significant remark or detail and keep track of your studying process.

How to Make a Bookmark?

Here are some tips you should take into account to create your own Bookmark:

  1. Select the right material for the future Bookmark. If you only have a regular paper you use to write and draw on, consider adding two or three layers to make it durable enough; otherwise, use cardboard or scrapbooking paper wrapped around any paper or plastic you have at your disposal.
  2. Add a small tassel to the main body of the Bookmark - you can purchase this element in a handicraft store or make your own tassel with the help of thread, string, or yarn. This way, the Bookmark will be visible even when the book is closed reminding you how many pages are left. Besides, you can match the color of the Bookmark to the tassel creating a small work of art.
  3. Carefully measure the size of the Bookmark template before decorating it if you already know what books and notebooks you will use it for. The bookmark cannot be too large otherwise it will stick out from the item it is in and you may easily rip it.
  4. The design of the Bookmark is up to you - you can draw on it, glue stickers, or make a collage out of scraps of paper or fabric you have in your house. If you are not sure about the integrity of your DIY Bookmark, you can always laminate it and preserve its original look for many years.
  5. Experiment with different shapes when working on a blank Bookmark. While long rectangular Bookmarks remain the most common, you can cut out a circle, triangle, or heart from paper or cardboard if you like it. Make a Bookmark that resembles a postage stamp with wavy edges or showcase your Origami skills by creating an envelope-shaped Bookmark you can put on the corner of the page.
  6. If you have magnetic paper, you can make magnetic Bookmarks that cover both sides of the page you last read or wrote on. This type of Bookmark means you need to use at least two layers of the material and hide the strips of magnetic paper inside - glue them to the internal parts of the main material and ensure they do not fall out. Moreover, you may put it horizontally to show more precisely where you stopped reading or writing.
