Logic Puzzle: What Is It?

A Logic Puzzle is a deduction game that asks the players to draw conclusions from several facts they have been given. Whether you want to create a murder mystery and let your friends eliminate potential suspects one by one after they understand the clues better or make a Logic Puzzle for kids to test their imagination and give them an opportunity to improve their problem-solving skills, it is important to spend enough time preparing the puzzle and testing it to see if you have left a loophole or failed to connect the dots in your scenario.

How to Make a Logic Puzzle?

Here is how you may create your own Logic Puzzle:

  1. Draw a table or grid - for instance, five rows and five columns. There should be enough space to enter the variables later - for example, go with the names James, Ellen, Mark, Betsy, and Steven in the horizontal rows while the columns contain the names of animals and birds - cats, pigeons, crocodiles, guinea pigs, and butterflies. Figure out the solution for the story - five friends went for a walk in the zoo and each of them met an animal or bird - and come up with the clues for the game (Ellen is a dog person, Steven is scared of insects, etc.) The clues written in the Logic Puzzle template are supposed to show the player the right answer that will include several answers.

  2. An easy Logic Puzzle will contain just a few characters, items, locations, and actions - if this is your first time working on a scenario like this, opt for the less complicated story that does not involve too many variables. However, as your scenario is progressing, you may find it is lacking some substance and decide to flesh it out with additional characters and ideas - add them one by one not to overload the game.

  3. It is a good idea to distract the players or to send them in the wrong direction by adding seemingly unrelated notions and ideas about the characters you have created for your Logic Puzzle Games. As long as it does not take away from the main story and does not lead the player to a dead end while they are working on a solution, an array of facts and characteristics that work as a red herring will make the puzzle more exciting.

  4. Do not forget to solve the puzzle before offering someone else to play it. It is important to go through the game and make sure you did not leave any loose ends and there are no inconsistencies or vague notions that imply the existence of more than one correct answer. Alternatively, you may share the puzzle with someone else while you are in the process of developing it if you believe you will benefit from a fresh pair of eyes. This may be helpful if you spent long hours working on the puzzle - it is easy to miss an error in this case.
