How Heavy Should My Cat Be?

It is important to mention that this may depend on the age, breed, and gender of the cat amongst other things. The general range should not exceed 4.5kg and should not be less than 3.5kg and depending on the weight, your cat will fall into one of five categories:

• Cats that are severely underweight require prompt care. Unless the cat is living on the streets or has been neglected, it is uncommon to encounter a cat in this state. These cats are easy to identify as their ribcages are visible;
• An underweight cat will have a slightly greater fat layer than very underweight cats, but not too much and it will still be possible to see their ribs protruding from under the skin;
• Whenever a cat is at its optimal weight, anyone can easily feel their ribcage when petting them and unless the cat is extending, leaping, or scrambling, you will not be able to see its ribcage. The cat should also have lustrous fur and be active and sociable. Although cats inside this weight category live for the most period of time, doing so requires the most work from those looking after the cat;
• Cats that are overweight surpass those that are at a healthy weight, and this is a severe problem. The ribs of such cats can still be felt, however, it will take some pressure and the fat will be felt by the fingers;
• Cats with obesity are more prone to developing cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and renal diseases, all of which reduce their lifespan. The added weight will strain the joints and make movement difficult.
