s.14A Fire Safety Act
Eligibility Criteria
(a) To determine eligibility for these Fire Services awards, “fire services” means the individual’s

service as a firefighter within Nova Scotia in a fire department that is registered with a
municipality, a recognized industrial fire brigade, or a recognized federal fire service agency.
(b) Time served by an individual as a member of a Junior firefighting service is NOT included as
fire services time for the medal or bars.
(c) If an individual served as a firefighter within Nova Scotia immediately before serving in the
Corps of Canadian (Overseas) Firefighters or on active service in the Canadian Forces within the
meaning of the National Defence Act (Canada), and served again as a Nova Scotia firefighter
within three months after his/her discharge from the corps or the forces, the time the individual
spent in the corps or the forces will be included as service as a firefighter for the purpose of
calculating eligibility in Section 2.
(d) An individual may be nominated posthumously for a Fire Service award.
2.
(a) The Fire Marshal may recommend an individual to the Minister for a Fire Services award if the
individual meets all the eligibility criteria as identified in these guidelines for that award.
(b) To be eligible for any Nova Scotia Fire Services Long Service award, the Fire Marshal must be
satisfied that the individual has made a significant contribution to the protection of persons and
property in Nova Scotia and that contribution is worthy of recognition through the issuance of a
Fire Services award.
(c) For a Fire Services Long Service Medal eligibility, the Fire Marshal must also be satisfied that
the individual has completed twenty-five years of fire service.
(d) For a Fire Services Long Service (35 year) Bar eligibility, the Fire Marshal must also be
satisfied that the individual has completed thirty-five years of fire service on or after December 31,
2007.
(e) For a Fire Services Long Service (45 year) Bar eligibility, the Fire Marshal must also be
satisfied that the individual has completed forty-five years of fire service on or after December 31,
2017.
3.
(a) Individuals who self-nominate will not be considered.
(b) An individual must be nominated by their Fire Chief, or if the individual is a Fire Chief,
nominated by their Deputy Fire Chief.
4.
The medal and bars may be worn on the left breast, subordinate to all Canadian and British Orders,
Decorations and Medals officially awarded under the authority of the Crown.
5.
The Fire Services Long Service Medal is a circular medal of rhodium plated metal 3.2 cm (13/8 in)
in diameter.
(a) bearing on the obverse the Maltese Cross on which is superimposed the Coat of Arms of Nova
Scotia and the inscription “Fire Services Nova Scotia”; and
(b) bearing on the reverse the inscription “For Long Service”.
6.
The medal must be suspended from a metal bar by means of a ribbon 3.2 cm (1 1/4 in) in width
comprising a red stripe 8 mm (10/32 in) in width in the centre and on each side;
(a) white stripe 6 mm (3/32 in) in width bordered by a green stripe 4 mm (5/32 in) in width; and
(b) red stripe 5.6 mm (7/32 in) in width at the edge of the ribbon.
7.
The 35 year Nova Scotia Long Service Bar is a silver plated bar with green background with
“thirty-five years” engraved on it.
8.
The 35 year Nova Scotia Long Service bar is to be attached to the front of the ribbon on the
Nova Scotia Long Service medal. (a)
(a) The 35 year bar is to be 1 cm (2.2 in) from the top of the ribbon.
9.
The 45 year Nova Scotia Long Service Bar is a silver plated bar with white background with
“forty-five years” engraved on it.
10.
The 45 year Nova Scotia Service bar is to be attached to the front of the ribbon on the Nova
Scotia Long Service medal.
(a) The 45 year bar is to be 2 cm (4.4 in) from the top of the ribbon.
11.
Each additional service bar award shall be accompanied by a 9 mm (11/32 in) diameter rhodium
plated rosette crafted in the shape of a Nova Scotia Mayflower.
(a) One rosette may be worn on the undress ribbon for each additional service bar awarded and
rosettes shall be placed symmetrically on the ribbon.
