How to Make a Hand Turkey?

Keep the kids entertained whether you are spending time with them at home as their parent or babysitter or you are implementing play-based activities and games in your classroom - here are some tips that will let you create a Turkey Cut Out:

1. Put the palm on the sheet of paper - it is better to opt for thicker paper or a carton in case the children will play with these toys for hours. Take a pen, pencil, or crayon and trace the hand firmly pressed against the surface of the future cut out. Once this is done, you can work on the "body" of the turkey and its "tail feathers" - you will have four of those if you choose to turn the thumb in the neck and head of the bird. You may also cut a small circle of paper and attach it in the middle of the pattern to depict the head. Do not limit yourself or the children to natural colors only - the brighter, the better, and it will be fun to use every crayon or paint available to decorate the toy.
2. This can become a memorable family tradition - every year you and your loved ones meet and make a Hand Turkey for every child that visits to see how much your children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews have grown in twelve months. Elementary school teachers and kindergarten workers can use this activity as well - every kid can trace their own hand and design the turkey the way they see fit. After this, you can put their art on the wall in the classroom or connect the drawings with threads to create a unique decoration before the Thanksgiving weekend. Alternatively, a Hand Turkey can be an assignment you give ahead of the weekend - the kids will present their designs and share their feelings and impressions related to the holiday by writing them down on the back of the drawings.
3. Announce a Hand Turkey drawing contest - the last day before the kids stay home to spend time with their families during Thanksgiving dinner you should propose the idea to trace their hands on sheets of paper, work on the design with or without your supervision, and then carefully cut out the patterns. Note that the contours of the hand are supposed to be thick enough to avoid mistakes during the cutting process. The children can also glue stickers or small pictures on their cut outs to make them even more personable. Ask your class to vote for the best turkey and award the winner - even a purely symbolic prize or an exhibition of their work in a visible place will motivate the kid for future accomplishments.
