What Is a Clothing Tag?

A Clothing Tag is a small label attached to a clothing item to provide the customer with the information about the garment in question.

Alternate Names:

• Clothing Label;
• Clothes Tag.

This tag is important not only before the clothes are sold but also afterward: the person that purchased them will refer to the details listed on the label to know how to wash the item to prolong its life. Moreover, the owner of the item will always be reminded of the brand or manufacturer that made the item which creates a positive brand association due to the durability of the garment.

How to Tag Clothing?

Follow these tips to attach a Clothing Label to the clothes:

1. Hand stitch the Clothing Tag or use a sewing machine. The thread should correspond to the label or the garment to remain unnoticeable to the eye.
2. You may sew all four edges of the tag to the garment unless you are providing additional details about the clothes on the other side of the label - in this case, only two edges are enough.
3. While the information on the Clothing Label is important to the consumer, it cannot be easily visible from the outside when the individual is wearing it. So, sew it into the inside of the clothing - for instance, near the neck of the sweater or shirt.
4. If you do not own a sewing machine, you can use an iron for woven tags - their back side has adhesive so if you apply heat, they will be attached to the clothes. This option is preferable if the clothing item does not come into contact with skin and will not be washed so use it for purses and not dresses.

How to Make Your Own Tag for Clothing?

Here is how you can create a Price Tag for Clothing from scratch:

1. Use polyester or nylon for your Clothes Tag - both materials are perfectly suited to be sewed into the garment, they will not harm the skin of the person that wears the item, and the information printed on these types of fabric will not fade after the owner of the clothes washes them in their washing machine.
2. Promote your brand by inserting your logo into the Clothing Label. If you want to avoid extra expenses or the Clothing Tag size does not let you print the logo, just the name of the company can be enough. The identification of the manufacturer is required for every Clothing Tag so you must also indicate the country of origin.
3. Describe the content of the fabric - list all the materials used to make the garment recording the percentages of every material. While the information you include has to be in the language of the country where the clothes are sold, if you have enough space, you may also add two or three more languages especially if many of your customers are foreign. Avoid abbreviations unless they follow international standards.
4. Enter the washing and care instructions for the customer - they should know how to take care of their clothes to make sure they last. Usually, these details can be found on the back of the label. There is no need to provide a large manual - since a Clothing Tag is small, universally known laundry symbols are enough. For example, a small picture of the iron crossed out means the owner cannot iron the garment and a triangle confirms it is allowed to bleach the clothes.
