What Is DD Form 2881?

DD Form 2881, NATO Secret Label, is a form issued and used within the U.S. Department of Defense to label mediums approved for NATO secret information. The latest version of the label was released by the Department of Defense (DoD) on May 1, 2004 , and can be downloaded below{class="scroll_to"} or through the Executive Services Directorate website.

Service members handling forms marked with DD 2881 require NATO security clearance, need-to-know authorization, and need to have undergone a NATO security briefing.

What Is NATO Information?

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization - or NATO - is an international organization of nations that signed the North Atlantic Treaty and the NATO Security Agreement. The countries within NATO include Belgium, Hungary, Portugal, Turkey, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Canada, Italy, United Kingdom, Norway, Estonia, Albania, Luxemburg, Iceland, Czech Republic, Latvia, Croatia, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, United States, France, Lithuania, Greece, Poland, Denmark, Romania, and Slovakia

NATO information is any data issued by or for the organization as well as any national information that a member nation released into the NATO security system. This information is controlled and protected with access determined by the holder and NATO security regulations.

What Are The Levels of Classification in NATO?

NATO has six different levels of classified information: NATO Secret (NS), NATO Confidential (NC), NATO Restricted (NR), Cosmic Top Secret (CTS), Atomal and NATO Unclassified (NU).

  1. NATO Secret is a level of classification applied to information which would cause serious damage to NATO if disclosed.
  2. Unauthorized disclosure of NATO Confidential (NC) information would be damaging to the interests of NATO.
  3. The NATO Restricted (NR) classification is applied to information the unauthorized disclosure of which would not be in favor of the interests of NATO.
  4. Cosmic Top Secret (CTS) is a security classification applied to information that would cause exceptionally grave damage to the organization if disclosed without authorization.
  5. ATOMAL information is either U.S. Restricted Data or Formerly Restricted Data that is classified pursuant to the Atomic Energy Act of 1954 or United Kingdom ATOMIC information that has been released to NATO.
  6. NATO Unclassified (NU) is a marking applied to any information that is the official property of NATO.
