What Is a 45-Hour Driving Log Sheet?

A 45-Hour Driving Log is a typed or handwritten document submitted alongside the driver's license application to obtain a driver's license. Prepared by the parent or guardian of the teenage driver, the driving log will show the local department of motor vehicles the less experienced driver has had necessary practice with the person who already holds a valid license and is ready to assist the learner by driving with them. As an option, the driver may use the help of a professional driving instructor or any driver's license holder approved by their parents. Every beginner driver needs the guidance and supervision of an experienced driver who will help them develop and improve driving skills, show them how to drive in different weather conditions, and provide them with feedback to explain how their practice is going. Together, the supervisor and the driver should plan routes and drives that will enhance the existing skills, talk through each drive, and document the experience once the practice is over.

How to Fill Out a Driving Log (45 Hours)?

Here is how a supervising driver should prepare the 45-Hour Driving Log:

  1. Contact your local department of motor vehicles to ask them whether there are specific requirements for the Driving Log. If the drivers and supervisors are allowed to bring the documentation they drafted from scratch, you can create and fill out your own template.
  2. Draw a table with seven columns. You need to enumerate the sessions, state the date and location of every drive, record the number of minutes the learner spent behind the wheel, indicate the total mileage, write down the conditions of the practice (whether it was the day- or night-time driving and what was the weather on that day), and enter your signature once every practice is recorded.
  3. Devote a separate sheet or table to list and enumerate skills the minor driver should have before their driving practice test - inspecting and starting the vehicle, smooth movement and turns, backing up, proper parking, and turning off the car. Additionally, it is recommended to teach the future driver to drive stick, change tires, parallel park, and maneuver.
  4. Confirm the driver has completed their driving practice and fifteen hours were spend working on night-time driving. Certify the document only contains true and accurate statements - if the Driving Log is falsified, the driver will have to go through practice again.
  5. Sign the 45-Hour Driving Log Sheet, indicate your driver's license number, and date the document.
