What Is a Model Contract?

Becoming a model and signing up for an agency can be an extremely exciting opportunity, one that can further your career. However, before signing a Model Contract with an agency, there are several things you need to consider in order to avoid disputes in the future.

Alternate Names:

  • Modeling Contract;
  • Model Agreement;
  • Modeling Contract Agreement.

Firstly, it is important to know what needs to be included in a standard Model Contract. All modeling contracts follow a similar structure and should include:

  • A financial agreement - details on the proportions of how the finances will be split up between the model and the agency, together with any information on taxes;
  • The time period of contract validity - generally this period fluctuates from one year up to three years;
  • Representation with other agencies - details on whether or not the model is exclusive to one agency, or whether a model is free to make a Modeling Contract Agreement with various agencies;
  • Model maintenance - information on what requirements and measurements the model must preserve for the contract to be valid. Here, information regarding the responsibilities of the model can be included. For example, any other additional expenses or behavior during representation.

Apart from knowing what must be included in all contracts, it is vital to know which specific contract you are signing and their limits.

How to Get a Modeling Contract?

There is no guaranteed way of securing a Modeling Contract, but the work is largely down to the model. Unless scouted independently, it is important for a model to do their own research and find a reliable, serious agency. Finding an agency that works for you is the first key step in securing a contract. Once you have found an agency that you will be happy to work with, find their contact details and send them some shots of yourself, maybe even include a short video of not more than 1 minute.

Do not worry about spending hundreds on a professional photo shoot. This isn't important for agencies - they much prefer genuine, honest, and natural shots from somebody who can show that they have a personality.

How to Get a Modeling Contract for My Child?

The same will apply for a Modeling Contract for a child. Find a suitable, reputable agency and get in touch with them after finding their contact details. Generally, it is good to attach a headshot and two full body photos. Again, these shots do not have to be professional but make sure they are natural without the use of any props. Remember to include your own personal information and information about the child including their name, age, hair and eye color, and their measurements.

You have to be prepared to travel quickly at short notice, so it is important to look for local agencies (or agencies that you can quickly reach if needs be).

After this, it is a waiting game. A professional agent will get back to you within a couple of weeks and inform you of the outcome. If it is successful, you will get signed on to the agency and then, more waiting. If any work does become available, your agent will be in touch and you will be dispatched to meet any potential companies that require a model.

Please remember, a reputable agency will never ask you for any cash upfront - this should be an immediate red flag. If you are faced with rejection, do not get disappointed. This is a completely normal thing to experience in the industry, one that everybody goes through at some point during their career. Just remember that there will be a job, perfect for your child - it just requires a little bit more time.
