- Before any charts are formed, we would strongly suggest meeting up with your roommates to discuss the fine details and the expectations that each roommate has from the cleaning schedule. The purpose of the discussion is to clearly set out all of the fine details for example, if you designate an individual to wash the dishes are they also responsible for drying them and do they do this after every meal?;
- Decide on the frequency of the cleaning schedule. Naturally, there are chores that will need to be completed every day. Apart from these, there are also chores that will need to be completed less frequently ranging from weekly, to monthly, to possibly even every season. Decide how this will be done, maybe you will opt to hire someone for deep or seasonal cleans;
- Create the actual chore list with a list of all chores. It is important to add information on what needs to be done, when it needs to be done and who should complete the chore. It would be fair to mix up these chores to ensure that everyone has the same input - this will help eliminate conflicts and a feeling of unfairness. We would recommend rotating these chores either daily or weekly;
- Next to this, you should provide a small gap for the roommate to sign off that they have completed the chore. It would be something as simple as a tick or space to write their full name, signature and time of completion;
- You should also decide what will happen to a roommate if they start slacking and miss a particular chore. This is bound to happen at some point so it would be a good idea to discuss this beforehand and make sure that all roommates are in agreement. That way if any roommate does miss a chore, they will know what penalty they will face. Maybe you can even introduce a list of extenuating circumstances such as sickness.
