Hexagon Graph Paper: What Is It?

Hexagon Graph Paper refers to a type of lined paper that includes two-dimensional shapes with six sides.

Alternate Name:

  • Hex Grid Paper.

While it is quite common with people that draw 3D art and work on geometric designs, this instrument is also popular among organic chemistry students and teachers - with the help of this tool, they can record organic reactions much quicker. You may also use thick paper with hexagons to create unique gift tags and cards if you want to showcase your handicraft talents.

How to Draw a Hex Grid by Hand?

It is possible to create your own Hex Grid pattern - all you need is a writing tool, a ruler, and a sheet of paper. Here is how you can draw hexagons with supplies you have on your writing desk:

  1. Start with the dot that will be the center of the hexagon. Determine the height of the hexagon and imagine the dot divides the line that demonstrates the height in two equal parts - draw the line with the pencil. Find the points right in the middle of the distance between the top point and the central dot and the low point and the central dot - draw two horizontal lines. Add two more lines that equal the interval between those two lines to ensure they both intersect the central dot - you can now see six points. Connect them and erase all superfluous lines. Once the first shape is done, repeat the steps using the first hexagon as a point of reference.
  2. If you have lined paper, you can transform it into Hexagon Graph Paper with the compass - draw a circle, divide it into four equal parts and add the lines that may cross the edges of the circle, draw one more line that can be strictly horizontal or vertical, mark the points where the intersections with the circle occur, and connect those dots creating a perfect hexagon.
  3. Traditionally, Hex Grid is black and white - black lines arranged on a white background. However, you do not have to stick to this color scheme especially if the tool you use to write or draw is not too dark and it would be less visible than a black pen or marker. You may customize the graph paper by turning the lines light blue or grey.
