Do You Need a Bill of Sale in Indiana?

The document is usually subdivided into the following types:

1. Indiana Generic Bill of Sale. This document is traditionally used to record the sale of personal property, electronics, furniture, and other items, for which no specific bill of sale form is available. The state of Indiana does not provide any government-issued forms for this purpose;
2. Indiana Vehicle Bill of Sale. The state released two official forms you can use in order to document the sale of your car:
   • State Form 44237, Bill of Sale. This form was released by the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. The form is used to document the sale of both vehicles and watercraft;
   • State Form 23104, Mechanic's Lien Bill of Sale. The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles issued this form for the holders of mechanic’s lien. According to the state laws, the seller is obliged to provide the buyer with filled out Form 23104 or the buyer will not be able to receive the Certificate of Title;
3. Indiana Gun Bill of Sale. Use this document to record the transfer of your firearm. No government-issued forms are available for gun sales.

Indiana Bill of Sale Rules

Except for the government-released forms, Indiana does not have any special requirements for the form. The document is considered valid as long as it contains all essential information pertinent to the deal. The information you should include in your Bill of Sale is as follows:

1. Full name and physical address of the seller;
2. The same information about the buyer;
3. Detailed description of the sold item. The details you enter should help to identify the sold item clearly;
4. Date of the sale;
5. Sales price;
6. Signatures of both the seller and the buyer.

The document should be prepared in two original copies for each party to keep one.

Does a Bill of Sale Have to Be Notarized in Indiana?
