Bill of Sale Requirements (Indiana)

  1. Identification and contact information of the seller. At a minimum, indicate the full name and physical address. It is recommended to enter the driver's license number and the daytime phone number;
  2. Identification and contact information of the buyer;
  3. Description of the sale item. The provided description should clearly identify the item. Enter the size, color, make, model, year, serial number, and other details. If the good being sold has any defects, you must disclose it to the buyer and list them on this document;
  4. Sales price. Indicate the price you agreed upon both in digits and words. You can also specify the payment method in this part. If the payment is made in several transactions, list them all with the dates and the amount due;
  5. Date of sale;
  6. Additional information. If your deal includes any additional terms, carefully describe them in this part;
  7. Signatures of the seller and the buyer.

The form is usually prepared by the seller in two original copies for each party of the transfer.

Does Indiana Require a Bill of Sale?

The state of Indiana does not require any Bill of Sale to document the transfer of personal property and other minor items. At the same time, both the seller and the buyer often prefer to have one as a legal record of their deal. These are important documents intended to protect the legal interests of the seller and buyer. Buyers normally use this document to prove that they are the legal owners of the described item. For Sellers, this document is legal evidence that the described item was sold, and that they hold no responsibility for either the item itself or for its employment. A detailed description of all pertinent details of the deal can protect both parties from possible fraudulent claims in a court of law if necessary.

The details, such as the date of purchase and the purchase price, allow using this document as the sales receipt. Information indicated in it may be required when you fill out your annual tax forms and when the Indiana Department of Revenue questions the price.
