A North Dakota Vehicle Bill of Sale - otherwise referred to as a North Dakota Car Bill of Sale - is a legal document the seller and the purchaser use to transfer the ownership of a vehicle. There are two types of bills of sale in North Dakota, both issued by the Department of Transportation:
- Form SFN 2888, Seller's Certificate and Vehicle Bill of Sale is a sales contract necessary for transactions between private parties. It is more widely used than the other form. It must include a full description of the vehicle and the seller's affirmation of ownership. This form requires notarization, so the fact of selling a vehicle in North Dakota must be acknowledged by a notary public.
- Form SFN 2902, Law Enforcement Impound Vehicle Bill of Sale is a less common form used to sell and purchase impounded vehicles. Various units of government may enter into transactions with private parties to sell impounded vehicles if they were not reclaimed by their owners.
Can I Get a Vehicle Registered in North Dakota With a Bill of Sale?
A bill of sale is not required to register a motor vehicle in North Dakota. To register a vehicle, you need to file Form SFN 2872, Application for Certificate of Title & Registration of a Vehicle, proof of paid excise tax, and an odometer reading statement to the local Motor Vehicle Division office.
