Connecticut Vehicle Bill of Sale (Form H-31)

Form H-31, Bill of Sale is a document that outlines the details of the sale or transfer of a vehicle from the seller to the buyer in the state of Connecticut. You can download a fillable Form H-31 through the link below.

Since selling or buying a vehicle is a major financial transaction for most individuals, it requires a lot of preparation. The importance of the Bill of Sale is overlooked sometimes; nevertheless, it proves a legitimate transaction took place and the seller cannot bear responsibility for speeding and parking tickets, for example, if they are incurred by the new owner. The information stated on the Bill of Sale is required for vehicle registration. Ensure that the document contains all the obligatory details to protect the seller and the buyer in case a dispute about the transaction occurs in the future.

The Connecticut Vehicle Bill of Sale is required to register a car before it can be used on any road or highway in the state. Any motor vehicle must be registered within 60 days, and do not forget to purchase insurance to meet the state requirements.

Selling a Vehicle in Connecticut

To sell a car in Connecticut you need to do the following:

  1. Compose and sign the Certificate of Title and give it to the buyer;
  2. Draft the Bill of Sale. It contains the seller and purchaser's names and addresses, selling price, specifies the motor vehicle and describes it (make, year, color, model, odometer reading, vehicle identification number (VIN), and signature of the seller. It should be noted that the Connecticut DMV Form H-31 does not include the history of the vehicle which is a separate report that helps the buyer to make a more informed decision about the item in question. Make sure to read the information carefully, see all the specifics captured and only then sign the paper. Both parties to the agreement should have a copy of the document for their records, the original belongs to the buyer;
  3. Remove the plates from the vehicle and cancel the registration. You can do that online or directly at the DMV. However, do not cancel the liability insurance on the car until the registration is officially canceled by the DMV.

Afterward, the new owner is required to register the vehicle presenting the completed form to the DMV and apply for a new Certificate of Title.
