What Is the Wheel of Life?

A Wheel of Life refers to a visualization tool that shows different parts of life, helps the user to understand whether they lack balance between those areas, and allows the individual to reflect on their day, year, and life. Use this diagram if you are feeling something is missing in your life or there is a strong suspicion you have devoted too much time to a certain activity failing to keep up with other obligations or dedicate time to your family, friends, and hobbies. A graph you may customize from scratch choosing what you believe to be significant to your successful existence can be revisited regularly to ensure you are able to balance your life, studies, work, and personal relationships.

How to Use the Wheel of Life?

If your therapist has offered you to depict your life through the prism of a Wheel of Life exercise or you prefer to practice self-care on your own, you should consider creating your own Wheel of Life and using it for your benefit. Here is what you need to do to get your life back to balance or achieve a more balanced lifestyle:

  1. Work on the blank Wheel of Life template. Usually, it consists of eight categories or segments put on a radar chart but it is up to you to remove some of those or add more parts to the diagram in case you believe you need a different approach. The tool may refer to your career, other sources of income and overall financial situation, physical and emotional health, relationships with your relatives, friends, and partner, personal growth, meaningful contributions to the society and local community, and activities you do just for fun. While you do not have to put them in order of importance, think about highlighting two or three areas that require your constant presence and attention.
  2. After you named all the parts of the wheel, conduct a Wheel of Life assessment - assign points to every category based on how much time you devote to different areas of your life. It will be easy to analyze the diagram if you give from zero to ten points to the segments and write the results down. After that, divide the parts of the wheel into ten equal parts and draw the dots corresponding to your initial assessment - connect the dots to see whether any areas of your life are not as substantial or successful as you would like them to be.
  3. Take measures to address the problems you have discovered while creating a Wheel of Life. It is hard to imagine that any person is able to give ten out of ten points to every single part of their life, especially personal development or entertainment, but once you have identified what is missing in your life, you can resolve the issue by slowing down elsewhere and picking up the pace when it comes to things and activities that make you feel alive.
