The Record Fire Scorecard is regulated by the Army-issued publication TC 3-22.9, Rifle and Carbine. The main purpose of record fire is to confirm the effectiveness of a training program and the individual proficiency of a specific soldier.

Though the rating of the soldier is based on the number of targeted hits, practice record fire is considered an important training exercise in and of itself. When participating in the exercise, the soldier, in addition to standard Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must wear a helmet and Interceptor Body Armor (IBA) with all Small Arms Protective Insert (SAPI) plates. They will receive 40 rounds and 40 single or multiple targets at distances from 50 to 300 meters.

The DA 3595 is easy to complete, as it is self-explanatory in most cases. The course is divided into three exercises, the scores for which are recorded in the corresponding tables:

• Table I records the results of prone supported firing position or foxhole supported firing position exercises. The choice of the position is at the unit commander's discretion. The soldier receives one 20-round magazine and should engage 20 targets at various ranges. The scorer ticks the corresponding box in the table - either "Hit," "Miss," or "No Fire."
• Table II is intended for the results obtained in a prone unsupported firing position. For this exercise, the soldier gets a 10-round magazine and has to hit 10 targets at different ranges.
• Table III is for recording the results of exercises from a kneeling unsupported firing position. The firer receives 10 rounds to hit 10 ranges. The results are marked in the corresponding boxes.

The process of evaluating the soldier's performance is as follows:

1. If a soldier saves rounds from difficult targets to use them on easier targets, credits for hits are not given.
2. The soldier should fire two rounds for the double target. If they miss the first shot, it is allowed to try to hit the same target with the second round. However, the ammunition from the 20-roundtable should not be used in the next exercise.
3. No scoring distinctions are made between near and distant targets or the order in which the firer engages them, but it is assumed that they should try to hit the target that poses the greatest threat (the closer one) first.
4. If the soldier fails the first attempt, they are given remedial training after which refire is allowed. The military who refires the course remains unqualified with a score of 22 or less.
5. In case of a weapon malfunction, the soldier is allowed to refire and their performance is added to the score of the first attempt.
