Form TR-312, Vehicle Bill of Sale, is a legal form you fill out when transferring the vehicle from one party, called the seller, to another, called the buyer. The form records the sale of a described vehicle and may transfer ownership of the vehicle in some cases.

  • Wyandotte County. This document is used to transfer ownership of an antique vehicle within the county.

Does a Vehicle Bill of Sale Need to Be Notarized in Kansas?

Kansas State law does not require you to notarize a Vehicle Bill of Sale. However, if you wish to add an extra layer of protection to your document, you and the buyer or seller can sign the form in the presence of two witnesses and a notary public, to ask them to certify your bargain.

How to Sell a Vehicle in Kansas?

Form TR-312 is a simple one-page document that consists of two parts: the Bill of Sale and the Antique Vehicle Transfer of Ownership. It requires the following information:

  1. Information about the seller, including printed name, address, city, state, and ZIP-code;
  2. The same set of information about the buyer;
  3. Information about the sold vehicle: year, make, Vehicle Identification number;
  4. Purchase price;
  5. Date of sale;
  6. Signatures of both parties.

The next section must be completed only if you transfer an antique vehicle and no title is available.

A Kansas Bill of Sale for a vehicle can be used to transfer the ownership of an antique vehicle only. An antique vehicle is any vehicle at least 35 years old. Ownership of all other vehicles should be transferred through the tile for the sold car. Make sure to perform the following steps:

  1. Fill out all information on the title of the vehicle you transfer;
  2. If there is no space on the title where you can indicate the purchase price, enclose a completed Bill of Sale form;
  3. If the person you transfer your vehicle to is your child, parent, grandchild, or grandparent, enclose Form TR-215, Affidavit of Relationship;
  4. Remove your license plate form the sold vehicle;
  5. You may file Form TR-216, Seller's Notification of Sale to inform the Department about the vehicle sale.

You may transfer the license plate from the vehicle you sold to a new vehicle you bought if it has the same registration type. This plate may be displayed on the vehicle up to 60 days after the date of purchase without transferring the registration. Note that in this case, you must have Form TR-39, Vehicle Ownership Transfer Agreement provided by a Kansas licensed dealer in your vehicle while in operation.
