The rank of Eagle Scout is a part of the flagship program of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) called Scouts BSA, which was developed for individuals aged 11 to 18. The candidates that want to participate in this program are supposed to comply with the ideas presented in the Scout Oath and Scout Law, which include several points, such as doing their duty to God, country, being morally straight, loyal, kind, obedient, and so on.

An Eagle Scout Letter of Recommendation should be based on interactions between the reference and the candidate. By analyzing those interactions, the reference can provide information to the Eagle Scout Board of Review, who will check the candidate's Eagle Scout Rank Application and ensure that all of the requirements have been met.

What Should Be in an Eagle Scout Letter of Recommendation?

A Boy Scout Eagle Letter of Recommendation is supposed to demonstrate the candidate's life outside scouting. It can include information about what they like to do in their free time, their sport and school achievements, extracurricular activities, etc. The content of the letter should answer four questions:

  1. What is the relationship between the candidate and the reference? The reference can explain how they met the candidate and how long they have known each other. They can also designate why they think they know the candidate well, for example, the reference can designate that they have been the candidate's teacher for a certain period of time.
  2. What has the candidate done to deserve a positive reference? In this part of the letter, the reference can present the achievements that the candidate has accomplished. It can include a description of how the candidate has expressed themselves in school, church, clubs, etc.
  3. Does the candidate live in accordance with the principle of Scout Oath and Scout Law? To prove that the candidate lives according to the ideals of the Scout Oath and Scout Law, the reference should provide a few examples that will illustrate this. They can describe situations when the candidate has shown themselves as a helpful, brave, and friendly individual, or has shown other qualities named in the oath and law mentioned above.
  4. How did the candidate grow over time? The answer to this question can depict the personal development of the candidate. They can state the qualities and skills the candidate has obtained, which skills have been advanced, and which difficulties have been overcome.

How to Write an Eagle Scout Letter of Recommendation?

Writing a letter of recommendation for an eagle scout is an easy-going process. The document can contain several parts, including:

  • Introduction. In the first part of the letter, the reference should introduce themselves and indicate how well they know the candidate;
  • The Characteristics of the Candidate. This is the main part of the document and it is supposed to provide an extended description of the candidate's personality, achievements, and way of life. In addition, it should include vivid examples that the references have based their opinion on;
  • Conclusion. At the end of the document, the reference can summarize everything designated in the letter and ensure the candidate is bound to becoming an Eagle Scout and wish them luck.

After the letter is completed, the reference should submit it to the Eagle Life Coach. The content of the letter is confidential and it is only to be used by the Eagle Scout Board of Review.

How to Ask for an Eagle Scout Letter of Recommendation?

After the Eagle Scout candidate has chosen who they would like to be their reference, they should contact and inform the reference about their decision. It would not hurt to indicate the reasons why the candidate has chosen them to be their reference, for example, due to the role they have played in the candidate's life.

When requesting an Eagle Scout Letter of Recommendation, the reference should be provided with copies of several documents:

  • The Recommendation Letter Form (if there is a specific one for the district);
  • The Scout Oath;
  • The Scout Law.

It will help the reference determine whether the candidate is following them in their daily life. Another thing that the reference should be acknowledged with is information about when and how the letter is supposed to be submitted.
