What Is a Student Evaluation Form?

A Student Evaluation Form is mainly used by teaching staff within an educational establishment. The main purpose of the form is student evaluation - to monitor how a student performs against some standard educational checkpoints. It helps monitor the progress that a student has made during their studies and will also highlight their strong areas as well as areas that they are struggling with. In turn, this information can help teaching staff to implement new strategies with the aim of enhancing a student's learning experience and also give students recommendations concerning areas they should focus on.

Teachers may use these forms several times throughout the academic year. This is usually done at the start of the academic year, in the middle and at the end. This is done so that teaching staff can draw comparisons between the knowledge a student had at the start of the year compared to at the end of the year. Teachers can then also sit down with their students (or parents depending on the age) and talk about any strong areas that the student has. They can also flag up any issues and give recommendations whilst also explaining what support will be offered within the educational establishment to tackle these issues.

How to Write a Student Evaluation?

Writing a Student Evaluation is simple enough but as a teacher, you need to be careful with the student evaluation comments in particular. It is important to be thorough in your evaluation and lay out the facts. We would recommend that you start with:

  • Providing a brief but concise introductory paragraph explaining the main reason and purpose of the evaluation;
  • Use the "sandwich structure." That is, start off by saying something positive, gently wriggle in any issues or negative things to say, and finish off again with a positive note;
  • Clearly state where the student is in terms of progress in relation to the studied curriculum. This should outline what was completed, what is outstanding and the quality of the completed tasks;
  • Describe any areas that are of issue and explain why this is an issue. However, just pointing out issues without offering any recommendations would be pointless. For this reason, you should also clearly lay out some advice or suggestions that the student can use to improve various aspects;
  • The student may well be in complete disbelief or in denial. If this is the case, you should provide the student with the reference of another individual that they can get in touch with to get a second opinion if they believe the initial decision was unfair;
  • Try to close off the evaluation with a bright or polite note. You want to encourage your students to perform better and work hard and if the form comes across as too strict, formal or mean - this may have the complete opposite effect on the student.
