How to Sell a Car in New Jersey?

Selling a vehicle in New Jersey, you should follow the required procedure in order to avoid penalties. After you sold your car, do not forget to remove the plates. You can transfer these plates to another vehicle you own. If you are not going to transfer your plates, surrender them to a motor vehicle agency. It is illegal to transfer the plates to another owner.

The second thing you have to do is to complete the reverse side of the car title and give it to your buyer. Provide the buyer with the form. It should contain the following information:

  1. Information about the seller. At a minimum, provide your full name and address;
  2. The same information about the buyer. If there is more than one buyer, list them all and specify their addresses;
  3. The sales price in US dollars. It is better to enter the price both in digits and in words. If the car is given as a gift, you have to specify it;
  4. Date of sale;
  5. Description of the sold vehicle, including the make, model, year, color, vehicle identification number, and odometer reading in miles. If the actual odometer reading is inaccurate, you must enter the estimate of what the actual reading should display. If the car has any defects, do not forget to inform the buyer about them and list them;
  6. Additional terms of sale if any. If you and the buyer agreed upon any special terms, like the payment is due at a later date or any other, carefully describe them on this document;
  7. Signatures of the seller and the buyer.

To be accepted as valid, the New Jersey Vehicle Bill of Sale does not require notarization. However, you may have one if you want to. Prepare the Bill of Sale in two copies. Give one to the buyer and keep the other one for your records.
