What Is a Location Release Form?

A Location Release Form must be completed by a property owner before filmmakers are granted permission to film on their property. Commercials, photo shoots, and documentaries are just a few of the various reasons a site could be used in the advertising industry. Using any of them is completely up to you; they're all completely interchangeable.

Alternate Names:

  • Film Location Release Form;
  • Location Agreement Release Form.

Start contacting people who might be willing to lend you their property for the shoot as soon as the release is complete, and while you're out researching locations. In order to protect themselves and the filmmakers who are filming on their property, owners must sign this form.

When Do You Need a Location Release?

A Film Location Release Form is not normally necessary when filming on publicly accessible territory, such as public streets and sidewalks or government buildings. As long as you don't plan to impede the regular flow of people or vehicles (such as closing roadways or sidewalks), you don't need authorization to hold your event. Unlicensed photographers risk having their shoots damaged.

You don't need a Location Release from a private business even though its sign is widely visible on public property, just like you don't need a talent release from someone you met on the street.

Photographing private property without a permit is simple, but it has its drawbacks. When filming on private property or in a private facility, there are no exceptions to the rule. If you wish to stay safe, you must find a route off of your current course.

Obtain a signed release if you're unsure; this is comparable to what you'd get for the release of performance rights. Ask for clarification if you're still unclear. Make sure you know who is signing anything relating to real estate before you put your signature on it yourself. Even if you ask politely, a random employee may refuse to allow you to photograph or disclose your work. If you're unsure about who's signing, call or email the property's registered owner and ask them to verify who's signing.
