Do You Need a Bill of Sale in Massachusetts?

You are not required to fill out this form every time you sell or buy any personal property within the state. However, if you sell or buy anything costly it is advisable to document the details of your deal. A properly created Bill of Sale is reliable evidence that can guard both parties of the deal from possible fraudulent claims.

  4. Specify the terms of the deal. At a minimum, you have to provide the date of the sale and the sales price. If your agreement includes any special terms, describe them in this document. For example, if the payment is made in several transactions, indicate the date of each transaction and the amount due;
  5. Sign the document and ask the buyer to sign it as well.

Does a Bill of Sale Have to Be Notarized in Massachusetts?

The laws of Massachusetts do not require you to notarize the form, as the signatures of both parties are enough to finalize the deal. However, you can notarize your document if you would like to have some extra protection. Prepare a copy of the document for each party of the deal.
