When you create your Firearm Bill of Sale, make sure it contains the following information:

• Full name and address of the seller. It is recommended to include the Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) card number as well;
• The same set of information about the buyer;
• Description of the sold firearm: the type, make, model, caliber, serial number, and other information necessary for the identification of the gun;
• Description of the condition of the sold firearm. If it has any defects, they should be indicated in the document. You are also advised to add a disclaimer stating that the buyer takes the firearm "as-is" and that no warranty is provided;
• Sales price, both in digits and in words;
• Date of sale;
• Additional information. If the firearm transfer includes any special conditions, describe them carefully in this document;
• Signatures of the seller and the buyer. Prepare this document in two copies. Hand one to the buyer, and keep the other with your documentation.

Illinois gun laws allow private firearm transfers. If neither the seller nor the buyer involved are Federal Firearms Licensed dealers, the transfer is considered private. If you sell a gun in Illinois as a private person, check the following guidelines to avoid potential trouble with the Illinois State Police:

1. Both you and the prospective buyer must have valid FOID cards;
2. Check the buyer's FOID card before transferring the firearm;
3. Remember that Illinois laws require a 72-hour waiting period for both long gun and handgun transfers;
4. Keep a record of your transfer (your copy of the Illinois Firearm Bill of Sale) for a minimum of 10 years from the date of sale;
5. If you deliver the sold firearm to the new owner, transport it unloaded and enclosed in a case.

Remember that some counties may have separate laws regarding firearm transfer. For example, if you are a resident of Cook County, you must fill out the county-issued Lost, Stolen, Destroyed or Transferred Firearms Report and submit it to the Cook County Sheriff's Office within 48 hours after you sold your gun. Do not forget to check your local laws before transferring your firearm.
