How to Sell a Boat in Iowa?
Selling a boat in Iowa involves several important steps:
- Prepare the watercraft. Remove your things from the boat, clean the vessel, repaint it or repair any defects, if necessary;
- Have your documentation in order. Keep the title, registration, repair/service receipts, and warranties in a single folder to make the sale easier;
- Advertise the watercraft with pictures and a determined price;
- Prepare and complete the Bill of Sale. Negotiate the terms and conditions of the sale and purchase. Only after that is completed may you sign the papers;
- Give all documents, including the warranty cards and maintenance records, to the new owner. The purchaser is then responsible for getting insurance for the vessel.
Once the sale of the vessel is finalized, the buyer must register the boat by appearing in person at the Department of Natural Resources with the Bill of Sale, Title, and Application for Boats, Snowmobiles, ATVs (all-terrain vehicles) and ORVs (off-road vehicles). The buyer must be prepared to pay all registration fees and show a picture ID. When the registration card is received, it is obligatory to keep it on board the vessel whenever it is being operated.
Traditionally, this document contains:
- Buyer and seller's full names and addresses, along with their driver's license numbers;
- Description of the watercraft, including its model, make, year, registration number, odometer reading, engine power (horsepower). If the boat has a trailer or an outboard engine, it must be reflected in the Bill of Sale;
- Price, date, and location of the sale. The parties are allowed to choose a method of payment;
- Seller's disclosure. If the vessel has any defects or faults at the time of the sale, the seller is required to inform the purchaser about them;
- Signatures of both parties.
Does a Boat Bill of Sale Need to Be Notarized in Iowa?
