"Generic Bill of Sale" - Colorado

What Is a Colorado Generic Bill of Sale?

The Colorado Generic Bill of Sale is the document you fill out to record the fact of the item transaction from one party, called "the seller", to another, called "the buyer". It is most often used during the sale of all kinds of personal items, like electronics, bicycles, jewelry, furniture, and others. All properly completed Colorado Bills of Sale are legal documents accepted by any official agency. For the form to be legal and to protect you effectively, fill it out as follows:

  1. Indicate the full name, physical address, and photo ID number of the seller. Provide the same set of information about the buyer;
  2. Describe the item transferred through this Bill of Sale. Enter all details that can help to identify the item clearly: the make, model, color, size, serial number, and others. List the defects of the sold item (if any);
  3. Specify if the buyer accepts the item "as-is", or if the seller provides any warranty;
  4. Enter the date the agreement takes effect;
  5. Indicate the sales amount both in words and in digits. If the payment is made in several transactions or there are any other special conditions, describe them in this document;
  6. Very often, the form will include the seller's disclosure, stating that the item description is true and the seller is the legal owner of the item.

The State of Colorado does not require you to fill out the form when selling or buying personal items and does not have any government-issued forms you can use for this purpose. You can create your own document or fill out any basic template. Download the Colorado-specific Generic Bill of Sale below, or build your own document with our customizable online template.

Does Colorado Require a Bill of Sale?

Though Colorado laws do not require you to file any paperwork when selling minor items, you are still recommended to do it. The Bill of Sale that meets all state requirements can be used by both parties of the deal in order to:

  • Identify the new owner of the described item;
  • Substantiate the fact of sale;
  • Protect the seller and the buyer against the possible fraudulent claims regarding the item;
  • Determine the amount of the required taxes;
  • Release the seller from further liability for the described item.

Prepare the document in two copies. Give one to the buyer and keep the other one for your records.

Does a Bill of Sale Have to Be Notarized in Colorado?

The Colorado Bill of Sale does not require notarization. The signatures of the seller and the buyer are enough for the document to become legal. However, both parties often prefer to have their Bill of Sale notarized for additional protection. Many sellers and buyers customize their documents with the section for two witnesses' signatures as well.
