How to Register a Firearm in North Carolina?

There is no registration of guns required under North Carolina firearm laws for both handguns and long guns, only for machine guns. However, to purchase a handgun, you must obtain a permit, and every county sheriff has to keep records of all purchase permits. You may apply for a purchase permit only in your county of residence, no matter how long have you lived in the county before that. These permits contain the name, age, and place of residence of each individual to whom a permit was issued - this way it is possible to identify the source of a firearm in case it was found at a crime scene, and also prosecute people who possess the firearms illegally.

A North Carolina Gun Bill of Sale should contain the following details:

1. Parties' identification information. State the full names, addresses, and driver's license numbers of the seller and the buyer;
2. Description of the gun. Enter the information that will make the identification of the firearm possible. Generally, you should write down the model, make, caliber, and the serial number of the firearm. Mention any customizations and defects of the gun in this section as well;
3. Price and the form of payment. Specify if sales tax is included in the price;
4. Warranties or guarantees. The seller may provide a warranty, or the gun is being sold in its current condition - "as is";
5. Signatures of the parties and the actual date. Prepare two copies for each party. Once the document is signed, it is considered valid, but you may add an extra layer of security to the transaction by going to the notary public to sign the document in the presence of this public officer.
