What Is a Michigan Generic Bill of Sale?
A Michigan Generic Bill of Sale is a form created and filled out to record details of the sale and purchase of personal property and other items that do not require a specific bill of sale. The document is generally signed by two private parties. It is considered a legally binding agreement that substantiates the fact of a property transfer from one party, known as the seller, to the other, called the buyer.

Do You Need a Bill of Sale in Michigan?
Michigan authorities do not require sellers or buyers to fill out a form when selling a minor property. Still, both parties often prefer to create it to have documented evidence of the item transfer. If filled out properly, a Michigan Bill of Sale serves the following purposes:
- Act as purchase receipt;
- Help to identify the sold item;
- Identify the new owner of the described item;
- Release the seller from responsibility for the sold item and its usage;

The State of Michigan does not have any special requirements for the document. Make sure you enter the following information into your form:
- Name and address of the seller or sellers;
- Name and address of the buyer. If there is more than one buyer, include them all;
- Description of the item. Provide enough details to identify the property you sell. The details may include size, color, shape, make, model, and other details. If the item has a serial number, provide it as well;
- Sales price. It is better to indicate the price both in words and in digits. You may also include the type of payment. If the item is transferred as a gift, specify it;
- Date of sale;
- Additional details. If there are any special conditions or agreements, it is better to list them on the document. It will give both parties a chance to check any additional conditions and to have proof against possible fraudulent claims;
- Signatures of all parties.
Does a Bill of Sale Have to Be Notarized in Michigan?
The laws of Michigan require neither notarization nor witnesses to consider the document legal. However, if you want an extra layer of protection, you can ask a notary public to certify it.
